The Town
Built in the mid 1700s, Inveraray is one of the finest existing examples of a Georgian “new town” and is
home to the Duke of Argyll, head of the Clan Campbell. It is the birthplace of Neil Munro, the author of
‘Para Handy’.
The town has two small supermarkets, a newsagent, a butcher, a delicatessen, a post office, a whisky
shop and a variety of gift shops. There is a Tourist Information Centre and several cafes. Four hotels
within the town provide a choice of bars, restaurants and leisure facilities, including a spa and swimming
pool.
The fairy-tale castle, with its neo-gothic turrets and conical roofs, overlooks the bay of Loch Shira. It hosts
the Inveraray Highland Games annually in July and is the venue for the Connect Music Festival. The local
Shinty pitch is within the castle grounds, as is Dùn na Cuaiche, a hill-top folly which affords superb views
over the town and surrounding area.
Other attractions in the town include Inveraray Jail, the Artic
Penguin Maritime Museum and the Bell Tower. Within a few
miles are Ardkinglas Woodland Gardens, Auchindrain Township
Open Air Museum, Crarae Gardens and Cruachan Power Station
(the Hollow Mountain).
